A throwback to British Columbia-in honor Indigenous Peoples Month. One of my favorite places on Vancouver Island was a small island called Alert Bay. We hiked up to the Burial Grounds of the Namgis First Nation from the ferry. The totems were quite beautiful and it was moving to really look at them in a more spiritual way. As they fade and fall it is a reminder of how the animals and creatures are there to honor and watch over the indigenous people who have passed. #jojosinternationalattractions #totems #canada #britishcolumbia #explorebc #totempoles #namgis #joeandjojostraveladventures #indigenouspeoplesmonthcelebration #ohcanada #explorecanada #spiritual #burialgrounds #sacredgrounds #nativeamericannovember #firstnations #namgisfirstnation

Impressive diving and swimming skills! A before & after shot of some Stellar Sea lions making their way through huge surf. You can see one timing the jump just right, to use the wave action to help carry them out. This massive haul out (a non-reproductive aggregation) at the Buckle I. group contains about a thousand individuals, mostly immature males & females, and a few males that have lost their heirums. ————————————————— #stellarsealions #sealions #bcwildlife #pnw #salishsea #pnwwonderland #pnwphotographer #pnwlife #pnwdiving #wildlifephotography #wildlifephoto #wildlifephotographer #wildlifephotographic #explorebc

Have you ever heard a rainwolf howl? This is one of the cutest things I have ever seen. After a day of sitting with these wolf pups, waiting for the rest of the pack to return from their foraging, @PaulNicklen and I were surprised when a lone howl erupted from somewhere in the forest right behind us. Instantly, all five pups answered the call; they burst into chorus before our eyes. Out of tune but with lots of enthusiasm, these rain wolf pups gave us the show of a lifetime. Coastal wolves live on the edges of the ocean; they swim between islands at times of low tide and are considered distinct from other types of wolves. Yet, rain wolves are afforded no formal protections from the BC government. I hope that sharing stories about my experiences in the wild with them can help change that. Follow @SeaLegacy and @PacificWild to learn more about conservation on the Canadian pacific coast. #TurningTheTide #ExtinctionEndsHere

Hiding for weeks in a blind, strategically located on the edge of a stream in the #beautifulBC rainforest, @PaulNicklen and I waited for an opportunity to photograph a family of rainwolves we knew were living nearby. We knew that they had cubs because we could hear them yelping, but they weren’t coming out. Paul said that no matter what we did, we couldn’t leave the blind - the wolves had to know that we were there, and they needed to not feel threatened by us; to accept us as a part of their environment. I read the entire Game of Thrones series, sitting there in the rain, eating salted almonds. Waiting. The days ran together, and then they started to run out. Paul was on assignment for @NatGeo and with a deadline nipping at his heels, he decided to hike to the next bay to scout for the pack. It wasn’t even an hour after he left that I spotted movement out of the corner of my eye - one by one, five wolf pups followed their mother right in front of our blind. I had a radio and desperately wanted to call Paul, but I knew that if I spooked them these rainwolves would disappear back into the forest. The mother looked across the stream. It felt like she was looking right into my eyes. She stared, as if to make sure I knew that she was looking at me, and then she left. The five pups stayed in the creek, playing and chasing each other. They found a piece of bull kelp and they used it to play tug-of-war; they wrestled and they pounced on each other, and I marvelled at the honor of becoming their wolf sitter.

My fans (aka mom and dad) were getting antsy for a new post so here’s another picture of me out in nature 🤷🏽‍♀️ 📸 by @al_lii123
