Sensei Kitazawa Hideta demonstrated an array of Noh theatrical masks tonight. His father, and now Kitazawa-san, are artisanal sculptors for the artform. Amazing and subtle craft demonstration! Like every artist, he’s got over 250 individual chisels and tools for carving masks, painting them, sanding them to their smooth veneer. The fronts and backs of the masks both receive his focus to make them their best for audiences and actors. He’s also restored and repaired Noh masks from the 1700s! That’d be as if someone asked us to restore the metal engraving for a Poor Richard’s Almanack cartoon! Wow!
